OUR STORY, our mission

We are Jared and Kelly McGriff-Culver, and together, we own Iron Flag Fitness. We are sharing our story and mission with you because we truly believe we can change your life through fitness.

Our love and passion for fitness and helping people are what made this business what it is today. Kelly started Iron Flag as a single mom of two young boys. As a single mom, she knew she needed to create an environment for her sons to grow up in that felt safe, positive, and like a family. To her, this is what the CrossFit community embodied. Shortly after opening her doors, Jared entered her life. Jared was looking for a new gym to call home for a couple of months while he was training to get back on an NFL roster. He met Kelly through coaching her oldest son, and she quickly introduced him to the gym.

Long story short, they quickly bonded over their love of fitness, sports, and the two boys. While football was always something Jared was passionate about, he knew he couldn’t play the sport forever. His lifelong goal was to open his own facility to train athletes and help impact their lives. Eventually, Jared hung up the cleats and was able to pursue this dream within Iron Flag Fitness, creating Iron Flag Athletic Performance.

Today, we have three beautiful, active boys. Watching them grow up in the gym and being able to coach them in their sports has been so fun! We reside in Downers Grove and truly love this community.

While the gym has grown and changed exponentially over the years—expanding our space, coaching staff, and programs—we have not wavered in what we truly care about at Iron Flag, and that is educating, empowering, and elevating people of all walks of life. From young athletes on the field to adults well into their 60s looking to extend their lifespan, we are your family’s hub for fitness. We embrace all ages, all fitness levels, and all backgrounds. Every day, we are changing the face of what fitness looks like, proving that fitness can be achieved regardless of age, background, body type, skin color, sex, and culture.

Our values and core beliefs revolve around creating an athlete-centered space. We aim to educate, empower, and elevate all our clients and staff to ultimately become the best version of themselves. This is accomplished by fostering inclusivity and a community that lifts each other up. With proper teaching, constant goal-setting, and encouragement, we believe that achieving what you thought was impossible—together—unites us.

Iron sharpens iron.

OUR GOAL:

TO PROVIDE

positive & challenging environments promoting health, fitness, well being & community

our story

CrossFit Solus was established in December of 2009. Our gym started in our 800 square foot shop with just a handful of friends and some lofty dreams that we could change the way that people thought about fitness. After seeing multiple physical transformations from our members through the CrossFit workouts and a Zone/ Paleo style diet, we knew there was something special to this program.

Our passion for CrossFit grew even stronger as we noticed the mental and emotional effects it had on people. The workouts were hard, sometime unbearable, but we were a team and we all battled it out together and bonded from it. Over time we could see the confidence, camaraderie and genuine care for our fellow athlete grow more and more each day.

In the beginning, we thought we were just selling fitness, but in reality we were developing relationships, building self confidence, overcoming insecurities, forging grittiness, learning empathy, and on top of all of the dramatic physical transformations that were in the works, the mental transformations were by far the most gratifying. Our Mission was simple, transform one life at a time. Every person that stepped foot into our gym, we made it our goal to give them best possible service and training program that we could. It didn’t matter where you came from or what your background was, for that hour of that day, we were a family and we were there to support you. A family that strived to make this the BEST hour of your day!

In 2011, me moved into our commercial location in town. As we approach year 11 of our affiliation, our vision for the future remains the same. We are in constant pursuit of excellence in all that we do and we will always strive to improve our program the best we can.
Our community of athletes at CrossFit Solus are second to none. They are some of the most caring and supportive group you will ever meet. We value every relationship we get to have with all our athletes and thank God to have them in our lives.

SCOTT STRATTON

Sales Director/Community
Development Coordinator

Scott began CrossFit in 2017 and loved it so much he decided to get his L-1. As an Army veteran, father of two daughters and travel softball coach, staying active has been an essential element of his life. Soon after starting CrossFit, he quickly began to feel the benefits of the program. He was more physically effective as a coach, more confident in his health, nutrition and wellness conversations and most importantly, he began to enjoy a deeper, richer quality of life. For these reasons, he is a firm believer in all aspects of the CrossFit program and the positive physical, social and mental health outcomes it creates.
As a coach, Scott believes that all athletes that walk through our doors deserve to feel comfortable, accepted, and challenged. He takes great pride in the athletes reaching their goals, learning a new skill, or accomplishing a personal record. Facilitating all of these aspects is something Scott tries to do every day. He believe that a positive attitude, honest effort and learning from your mistakes can create a system of success that will extend far beyond the Crossfit box.

Lastly, CrossFit is about community. Through the shared hardships of effort, sweat and accomplishment, he enjoys watching and participating in the camaraderie and friendships that develop at Iron Flag.

Caicina Jones

COACH

Caicina did not play sports as a child and would not have described herself as an athlete 12 years ago. Since then, she has tried her hand at running, obstacle course racing, powerlifting, olympic lifting, and CrossFit. When Caicina was introduced to CrossFit in 2014, she was immediately hooked. She found CrossFit to be both challenging and rewarding. She specifically took to strength training with a barbell. She recently started exploring competitive weightlifting and is working on her USA Weightlifting coaching certification.

Caicina believes in CrossFit’s mission of functional fitness and accessibility for all. She is passionate about helping people to understand the “why” of movement so that they can move well and move with purpose.

“My favorite thing about CrossFit is how adaptable it is. Everyone CAN do CrossFit. As a coach, I look forward to helping people grow, surprise themselves, and actualize their goals.”

When she’s not at the gym, Caicina is a full-time school psychologist and part-time university instructor. She shares her passion for strength training with students by serving as the sponsor for the Weightlifting Club.

SARA PADALIK

COACH

Sara has always been involved in athletics throughout her life. She grew up playing competitive softball and volleyball. And, played collegiate volleyball and ran track/field.

She was introduced to CrossFit while completing my Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She instantly fell in love with the atmosphere, community, and challenge that it presented upon walking in the door. The challenge knowing there is ALWAYS something to improve on continues to bring me back daily.

“My favorite thing about coaching is tying together the medical knowledge I have learned and practiced with CrossFit concepts/mechanics to improve a community members quality of life. I also love how coaching allows me to be more of a proactive front-line worker to help address our community members goals while educating in the process.”

CATHERINE LOY

COACH

Catherine was always active kid, but as an adult working in technology sales, her primary form of exercise was either running or sweating it out to Shaun T’s Insanity in her basement. After having twins, a friend convinced her to join the YMCA where she started taking group fitness classes. She especially loved primal fitness, which was described as “CrossFit without a barbell” and prioritized functional movement with varied daily workouts. Over the next few years with this group, she completed several Spartan trifectas and the YMCA became the focal point for her family and jump started her love for group fitness.

In 2017, She became certified in Les Mills Grit series, which is where she was introduced to more of a HIIT style of training. She loved it so much she started teaching at 3 local NJ YMCAs as a way to get involved with and to give back to the community.

Catherine and her family moved from New Jersey to the Chicago-land in 2019 when she decided to join Iron Flag Fitness. After being exposed to the workouts and community, CrossFit became her preferred way to exercise. “It sure beats running! I love being the cheerleader to class participants and I love the group camaraderie. People make an active decision to come to the gym, so I feel they deserve enthusiasm and encouragement to become their very best selves.” Catherine became L-1 certified in July of 2022 and truly enjoys coaching and helping people find their best verson of themselves.

She lives in Clarendon Hills with her husband and 3 kids who also attend the Iron Flag Athletic Performance classes.

That is the driving principle that has lead him to be apart of one of the greatest communities known as CrossFit by achieving the CF-L1 certification.

Casey is no stranger to the coaching environment as his father was a high school teacher and coach. All of his earliest memories revolve around sports related activities and team environments. Coaches have been a tremendous part of his growth not only as an athlete but as a person of society.

As a father of three, Casey thinks it’s important to show his kids what it means to take care of yourself and others by being physically, mentally and relationally fit. He is able to exemplify those attributes by being a part of the Iron Flag family.
